Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Answered

What we build, how we work, what it costs, and how we're different from a consultancy, an agency, or a freelancer.

Getting Started

How quickly can we have something in production?

It depends on what we're building. A workflow automation can ship in days. A custom app can ship in weeks. A full platform takes 30-90 days from kickoff. We tell you the realistic timeline during the discovery sprint — and we hit it.

Do we need engineers or AI specialists on staff?

No. That's the point. We're the team. We handle architecture, build, evals, deploy, and operations. Your team learns alongside us so you can run what we leave behind — but you don't need to hire $300K specialists.

What does a typical engagement look like?

Most start with a paid Discovery Sprint (1-3 weeks) where we map your business, identify what to build first, and deliver a roadmap with cost/effort/value estimates. If it's a fit, we Build & Ship the work — workflow, app, platform, or AI agent. Many clients keep us on a Run & Expand retainer afterward.

What We Build

What kinds of projects do you take on?

Operational software — chosen by the problem, not by the menu. Custom platforms (multi-location ops, specialty business management, internal tools), mobile and web apps (customer-facing or internal), workflow automation (reporting, document, operational), and AI agents (domain-specific assistants, custom Copilot extensions, narrow operational agents). The common thread: software that goes into the operational systems your team already runs.

Can you work with our existing stack?

Yes. We integrate with whatever you already run — ServiceNow, Salesforce, M365, Stripe, Twilio, your internal APIs. We're not a vendor trying to migrate you onto our platform; we're builders extending the systems you already pay for.

Do you build the AI part, or also the regular software?

Both. We're a full-stack software team that's AI-native — meaning we use AI to deliver faster AND we build AI features into products where it makes sense. The car-storage platform isn't an AI product. The internal Copilot agent is. Both are us.

Security & Compliance

Where does our data live during a build?

Your call. Default is your environment — your cloud, your network, your accounts. For regulated workloads (HIPAA, SOC 2, FERPA, ITAR), we default to on-prem or your VPC. We design around your security model, not the other way around.

Are you SOC 2 or HIPAA compliant?

We build to your compliance posture. Audit logging, access controls, encryption at rest and in transit, PII redaction in AI pipelines — all standard. For SOC 2 Type II artifacts or vendor risk questionnaires, we'll work with your security team during scoping.

Can AI models be trained on our data?

Only with your explicit consent, and only on infrastructure you control. Fine-tuning, when we do it, runs on your hardware or your VPC. Your data stays yours.

Pricing

How does pricing work?

Fixed-fee per phase. No surprise scope. Discovery is paid (we don't do free pilots). Build & Ship is sized to your project. Run & Expand is a monthly retainer scoped to the surface area of what we've shipped.

What does a pilot or first engagement cost?

Discovery sprints range from $4K-$25K depending on scope (1-3 weeks). Build & Ship engagements range from $15K-$250K depending on whether you need a single workflow, a custom app, or a full platform. Run & Expand (managed operations) is $1K-$15K/mo. See the pricing section on /services for the full breakdown.

What's the smallest engagement you'll take?

A focused Discovery Sprint at the low end of the range ($4K, ~1 week) where we scope one specific build for you. Or a small workflow build that ships in days. We don't have a minimum that excludes growing businesses — we just want to be honest about what fits in the budget.

How We're Different

How are you different from a Big-4 consultancy?

They'll give you a strategy deck. We ship working software in weeks. We don't bill hours; we deliver outcomes. Big consultancies are excellent at board-level transformation programs — if that's what you need, hire them. If you need one thing built and shipped this quarter, hire us.

How are you different from a freelancer or boutique agency?

We bring delivery discipline that scales — evals before deploy, observability built in, runbooks for handoff, security baked into the architecture. A freelancer can build a thing; we ship production systems. And there are two managing partners on every engagement — bus factor isn't a question.

What does 'AI baked in where it makes sense' actually mean?

We don't bolt AI onto every project. Sometimes the right answer is a clean integration, a custom CRUD app, or a workflow automation with no AI involved at all. When AI does belong — assistants, classification, retrieval, drafting, agentic workflows — we build it with evals, guardrails, and observability so it actually works in production.
